Sore throat is the first sign of viral upper respiratory infection, such as cold or flu and also bacterial infection such as strep throat
CAUSES:
- Spread of viruses such as cold or flu.
- Bacterial infection caused by streptococcal pharyngitis which causes strep throat
- Allergies can cause sore throat
- Exposure to smoking or secondhand smoke also results in sore throat.
FOODS TO BE INCLUDED:
- Yellow orange fruits
- Vegetables
- Green leafy vegetables
- Seafood
- Lean meat
- Yogurt
DIETARY FACTORS
- Include plenty of vitamin C which helps to reduce the duration and severity of sore throat.
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Zinc rich foods help in increasing immunity. Good sources of zinc include yogurt, dairy products, seed food, lean meat, eggs and whole grains.
- Cut down on caffeine as it results in drying of the membranes and thickness mucus.
HOW TO GET RELIEF FROM SORE THROAT:
- Gargling with hot salty water
- Gargle with warm water adding 2teaspoons of cider vinegar to it
- Broths, soups and semisolid liquids like custard, puddings may help to get relief.
PREVENTION :
Maintaining good nutrition and maintaining good hygiene may help in reducing frequent episodes of sore throat.
