Inflammation, tenderness, redness and unbearable pain in joints due to excess deposition of uric acid in the joints. Gout is a form of arthritis.
FOODS TO LIMIT:
- Vegetables high on purines
- Cauliflower
- Asparagus
- Green peas
- Spinach
- Mushrooms
FOODS TO AVOID :
- Organ meats
- Sardines
- Meat extracts
- High purine foods
- Alcohol, especially red wine and beer
- Skipping meals, crash diets
FOODS TO INCLUDE:
- Plenty of fluids
- Fruits
- Vegetables
SYMPTOMS:
- Swelling of joints
- Excruciating tenderness in the joints
- Inflammation
- Unbearable pain if touched
DIETARY MANAGEMENT:
- Lose weight gradually :losing weight especially around the abdomen often prevents future attacks
- Modify your drug therapy: Change treatment if experiencing severe joint pain while on drug therapy.
- Avoid protein rich foods: High protein foods should be avoided completely. Moderate proteins from cereal sources can be consumed.
- Consume plenty of liquids: 2-3litres of water is recommended in a day to dilute urine and prevent kidney stone formation.
- Eat fish rich in omega-3’5: Omega -3’s have been found to reduce gout and inflammation in people.
