Rapid intake of unusually large amounts of foods is known as binge eating. Frequent or recurrent episodes of binge eating is termed as bulimia nervosa.
EFFECTS OF BULIMIA NERVOSA:
- Repeated purging can cause nutritional deficiencies and imbalance of sodium and potassium which can lead to symptoms like fatigue, fainting and palpitations.
- Acids in vomit can damage tooth enamel and the lining of esophagus.
- Excessive laxatives can irritate the large intestine and produce rectal bleeding.
Overuse of laxatives disrupts normal bowel function, leading to chronic constipation when they are discontinued

DIETARY MANAGEMENT :
- Include potassium rich foods like dried fruits, bananas and fresh fruits and vegetables which will help to restore the mineral which has been depleted by vomiting or laxative abuse.
- High protein diet along with starches which include favorite binge foods should be introduced in small quantities.
- Bulimics who have taken excess laxatives may need a high fiber diet to overcome Constipation.
- Whole grain cereals and breads, fresh fruits and vegetables and adequate amount of fluids should help in restoring normal bowel function.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, progressive relaxation routines can help
