Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to derive energy from blood sugar or glucose. This results when body produces less or no insulin, a hormone needed for glucose metabolism.
Types of Diabetes:
Type1 Diabetes (Insulin dependent Diabetes or Juvenile onset diabetes) – This disease often develops in children.
Type2 Diabetes (Non Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus or Adult onset Diabetes) -This disease often develops in adults
Causes of Diabetes:
- Weak immune system is the cause for type1 diabetes which results in destroying the insulin producing cells of the pancreas.
- Unhealthy lifestyle and obesity are one of the major causes of type2 diabetes.

Prevention:
Maintaining healthy weight is a powerful preventive medicine for Diabetes.
Symptoms of Diabetes:
- increased appetite
- fatigue
- increased thirst and urination
- dizziness or blurred vision
- weakness
- unexplained weight loss
- wounds or sores which take a longer time to heal or do not heal.
Diet strategy:
Diet is the cornerstone of diabetes management.
- Carbohydrates are the key to glucose. Carbohydrate rich foods like breads, cereals, vegetables should account to 45-60 percent of their daily calories.
- Nutritious protein sources are very important. High quality protein foods like lean meats and low-fat dairy foods are recommended. About 10-20 percent of daily calories should be from protein.
- Low fat diet is a must. Fats found in foods such as vegetable oils, nuts, fish and avocados help to stabilize blood sugar levels.
